The Office of City Planning and Development seeks to make Columbus the most livable city in Mississippi by strengthening and revitalizing neighborhoods and commercial centers, preserving its historic character, building civic pride and promoting a healthy and sustainable city.

The office is responsible for plans, programs and policy to carry out its vision and promote the growth and orderly development of the City of Columbus.

Code Enforcement

It is the responsibility of the Code Enforcement Department to regulate (abandoned and occupied dwellings, overgrown lots, to include unkempt properties),  the existing codes and ordinances that govern the maintenance and aesthetic value of residential and commercial properties. An important factor in a city’s ability to consistently thrive and experience growth is the maintenance of existing developed properties.

The Trotter Convention Center offers versatile faculties, which can be adapted to accommodate trade shows, banquets, dances or small group meeting.

The Trotter Convention Center is located in downtown Columbus on Second Avenue North; it can be entered from either Second Avenue or Fifth Street.

The members of the Columbus Police Department are very proud to be serving the finest community in Mississippi. Our department was established in 1821. Our staff currently consists of 74 authorized full-time police officers, 11 civilians and 16 reserve officers. We have five divisions which include Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Narcotics, Community Policing, and Administration.

The Office of Federal Programs is a department of the City designed to apply and administer Federal and State Grant Programs for the City of Columbus. The Department provide services to the Community and elected officials within the City limits. Services include securing grants in areas of Economic Development, Housing reconstruction, Public Facilities, and others that enhance the quality of life. The Office of Federal Programs is also the City’s Community Development Department.

The Building Inspection Department serves as the code enforcement department. Our area of responsibility includes permits, inspections, zoning, floodplain compliance and addressing.

Public Works

The City’s Public Works Department is located at 2502 Bell Avenue.  The hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 6am to 4:30 pm.
