Joseph B. St John - Chief of PolicePolice Chief Joseph St. John (662)244-3528 Serving Since: August 1, 2007 Joseph B. St. John was named the Chief of Police of Columbus on July 2, 2007 and started his service on August 1, 2007. Prior to his employment with the city, he had been employed by the Newport News Police Department for 23 years and held the position of Captain before his retirement. During his career, he had the opportunity to work closely with the community and be an integral part of the department's commitment to community policing. He has taught this concept throughout Virginia and the nation, to include the 2007 Mississippi Police Chief Conference in Biloxi, Mississippi. He has received numerous awards for his work during his career. He collaborated with the Commonwealth of Virginia's Attorney General's office to implement the program Class Action - a law based middle and high school curriculum. Chief St. John was instrumental in the opening of the Columbus Crime Lab in October 2008, Mobile Crime Lab in January 09, and the hiring of a Property and Evidence Technician in January 09. He has recently formed a DICE (Drug Interdiction Crime Enforcement) Team to target high crime areas within the City. He will also be releasing monthly crime statistics to illustrate wherecrimes are happening, what crimes are occurring, and how the Columbus Police Department is going to direct their attention to those crimes. Chief St. John is presently involved in the community by being a member of The East Columbus Lions Club, Main St. Columbus, Public Relations Association of Mississippi (PRAM), Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers, Inc., and President of the Greater Law Enforcement Association. Chief St. John has a B.A. degree in Criminal Justice from St. Leo’s College and is a graduate of the Southern Police Institute.
